Total number of persons employed in the US nonfarm sector, excluding farm workers, private household employees, and proprietors.
Plain English
Nonfarm payrolls count all US workers except farm workers and a few other categories. It's the most closely watched monthly employment indicator because it reveals how quickly the job market is growing.
